Tree sculptor Jeff Klatt at work in Storm Lake

On a cold day in early February, we were driving around Storm Lake when we chanced to find "chainsaw artist" Jeff Klatt working on a new tree sculpture, this one in Circle Park on the lakeshore, just south of the campus of Buena Vista University. Another Klatt sculpture is just across the street to the east and shows a fun looking beaver, the mascot of the BVU athletic teams.

Here is a good look of Klatt in action as he does some fine work on a cardinal, which he'd "carved" in the tree.

Klatt is so good he can do very intricate carving with his chainsaws, as he's showing here while touching up the beek of a cardinal.

Here is a view of a finished tree sculpture of a bear that Klatt did earlier in an old tree along the lakeshore, adjacent to the King's Pointe Waterpark Resort.

There are 12 to 14 of his tree sculptures on display now around the community of Storm Lake, and they've become such an attraction that the Storm Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has information ready for people who have started going on self-guided tours of them.
