How the donut man from Bunkers Dunkers in Jefferson helped land RAGBRAI XXXVI for an overnight stop here!
The route for the 2008 RAGBRAI -- that's the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa -- includes our Greene County seat of Jefferson as an overnight stop on Monday, July 21. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people will be in Jefferson that night. Read the amazing story here about a chance encounter three years ago in Florida, where our vacationing local donut king Randy Bunkers warmly greeted a stranger who was wearing a RAGBRAI T-shirt. The fellow happened to be RAGBRAI director T.J. Juskiewicz -- and now, hurrah! RAGBRAI is coming our way!

Our hometown of
Cooper may look
pretty sleepy but
there's a whole lot
happening here!
There’s the annual Cooper Prom (for all ages), concerts, basketball, suppers, ice cream socials and people coming through all the time on the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Here is the story on the little community in Greene County, Iowa, that is now home for the Offenburgers.

Here's looking at life
at Simple Serenity Farm
Carla Offenburger got the lawn work season started Sunday, April 20. We saw rhubarb and lilac bushes budding, but the bad news is that we realized we must have the three ugliest trees in Greene County. Click here for larger format
Karen Lawton and her son-in-law Will Nailor, of Indianola, are shown with some of the mess in the kitchen as the egg decorating was nearing its finish.
Our eggsclusive coverage of the Lawton family's
fourth annual Easter egg decorating contest

COOPER, IOWA
Our friends Karen and Doug Lawton, who farm a mile northeast of Cooper, have a fun Easter tradition that is now four years old. On Good Friday evening, they host an Easter egg decorating contest for all ages. Contestants come from their extended family, friends and sometimes a few strays.
A key collaborator is Matt Schutt, who lives in Jefferson and teaches instrumental music in the East Greene schools. Schutt has given the event its actual name, “The Great Friday Egg Decorating Contest.” He apologizes “if that’s sacrilegious, but this party is so much fun that it makes Good Friday a great Friday.”
We Offenburgers have served as judges the last three years, and we set the categories, which we announce a few days before the contest. This year’s categories included “RAGBRAI-EGGS” in honor of RAGBRAI (the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) coming through Greene County this July, “Britney Spears,” “Ethanol Eggstravaganza,” “Martha Stewart Eggs” for fancy ones, “Successful Farming,” “Draegg Bulldog” in honor of the great season by the Drake University men’s basketball team, “Presidential Eggs,” “Almost Paradise Eggs” to use the theme for the upcoming Cooper Prom, and several other categories.
The Lawtons and pals say they browse the Internet for decorating ideas.
Karen Lawton admitted she also tries to watch Martha Stewart when she does Easter egg decorating on her TV show. “I think it’s probably a sickness, but you know, I could spend all day decorating eggs with Martha,” Karen said. “I really enjoy that.”
Doug Lawton said he made a special trip to the crafts area of the Ben Franklin store in Jefferson. And the Lawtons’ son-in-law Justin Towers, who now lives in Huxley, asked his mother Julie Towers in Churdan if he could go through her crafts supplies to pick up a few things he could use on his eggs. Justin, who is a carpenter, is actually one of the most consistently creative of the egg decorators.
Schutt reported that nine dozen eggs were hard-boiled for this year’s contest.
The event opened with a “gadget supper,” for which everybody was supposed to cook food using various kitchen gadgets that we all seem to accumulate but seldom ever use.
You can check out some of the fun in the photos below.
Hostess Karen Lawton and Matt Schutt, of Jefferson, are shown here as some of the nine dozen hard-boiled eggs are being colored.
The Lawton family members and their egg-decorating guests take the contest so seriously that the judges are pampered, and even bribes are attempted. Here judges Carla and Chuck Offenburger receive a gift bag from Karen Lawton.
Cooper Nailor, 4-year-old son of Will Nailor and Kati Lawton Nailor, of Indianola, is shown here at one of the decorating stations with his uncle Justin Towers, of Huxley.
Justin Towers has a real flair for decorating Easter eggs, including using a glue gun for special effects and to attach accessories.
Chris Deal, an Iowa State University student from Jefferson, is shown doing some finishing art work on one of his eggs.
Doug Lawton was using special cuts of construction paper to add to his egg decorating.
The kitchen sink and nearby counter was a disaster when the egg decorating was completed.
Matt Schutt is shown here cleaning the microwave after one of his hard-boiled eggs blew up in it. How'd that happen? "I had used some crayons to color on the outside of the egg, and I colored it real thickly," he said. "I thought I was being real creative by putting the egg in the microwave, just to try to soften up the crayon enough so I could blend the colors. I didn't realize it'd blow up the egg. What a mess!"
Cooper Nailor was more focused on shooting baskets than on Easter egg decorating.
Young Cooper, when asked if he is an Iowa State fan as his basketball jersey indicates, answered, "I am a Cyclone basketball player!"
Diana Lawton Towers, and her four-month-old son Nathan, of Huxley, were playing in the family room while most of the Easter egg decorating was going on in the kitchen.
Easter egg decorating judges Carla and Chuck Offenburger start their deliberations.
One category, for "Martha Stewart eggs," allowed the decorators to try their fanciest touches on Easter eggs.
One category in the Easter egg decorating, saluting the success of the Drake University men's basketball team, was called "Draegg Bulldog." One egg was decorated as a Cinderella wearing a crown and wearing a silver slipper. Another was identified as "Adam Eggenecker," a nod to the Bulldogs' star Adam Emenecker.
The winning entry in the "Pen of Three" category were these "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" eggs decorated by Matt Schutt.
These "Eggs of a Feather" were entered in the "Pen of Three" category by Doug Lawton, who made a special trip to the Ben Franklin store in Jefferson to get the yellow bird feathers.
These "egg apples" were entered in the "Pen of Three" category by Chris Deal, whose family has the well-known Deal's Orchard west of Jefferson.
The three top placers in the "Pen of Three" category were (left to right) Matt Schutt, Chris Deal and Doug Lawton.
The "Best of Show" winner was Matt Schutt with his red rooster, which had a comb made of red clay, feathered wings and other nicely-done details.
A special category was "Best of East Greene," the nearby school district where Matt Schutt (right) teaches instrumental music. The winner was Justin Towers (rear) who decorated an egg to resemble Schutt himself, with the red hair, red mustache and beard and playing a trumpet!
